Whilst I admire your call for justice unfortunately we have elected a government who respects revenge, consequences and an eye for an eye. Many coalition MPs are fundamentalist Christian’s and this is their old testament interpretation of how society works. You have the successful and the downtrodden. The successful have been blessed by God the rest are sinners. So sadly your call for any sort of justice from our current government will fall on deaf ears. Sure the research says these policies don’t work but this isn’t about research it’s about votes. Their polling shows that the majority of people who get out and vote, older and white love this punitive stuff. I know I sound cynical and I am but let’s face the tragic fact that Luxon and his fundamentalist elite are not interested in listening to reason only to the seductive whispering of power and we all know what power does to those who wield it. Buckle up.

I hear it mate, and get the cynicism and frustration. Tbh mate, my target here is widening the conversation and educating the public. This government has a mandate for revenge based justice, the only way to change that is to use these opportunities to dialogue in our communities, present the evidence, and outline the flaw in this approach. I am optimisitc that the conversation is changing in our communities, its up to you and i to keep it going, with our friends, family, at dinner tables and at the cafe. The case for justice reform will be won in the community before it presents in Parliament

I like your response and thank you for the reminder. You are right just some days it all seems so bleak and not just here in NZ. I plant lots of trees and trap stoats and that helps.

Commitment Card

Martin Luther King, Jr.

1963

I hereby pledge myself—my person and body—to the nonviolent movement. Therefore I will

keep the following ten commandments:

1. Meditate daily on the teachings and life of Jesus.

2. Remember always that the non—violent movement seeks justice and reconciliation — not

victory.

3. Walk and talk in the manner of love, for God is love.

4. Pray daily to be used by God in order that all men might be free.

5. Sacrifice personal wishes in order that all men might be free.

6. Observe with both friend and foe the ordinary rules of courtesy.

7. Seek to perform regular service for others and for the world.

8. Refrain from the violence of fist, tongue, or heart.

9. Strive to be in good spiritual and bodily health.

10. Follow the directions of the movement and of the captain on a demonstration.

I sign this pledge, having seriously considered what I do and with the determination and will to

persevere.
