What we’re about

When Lambs Are Silent is a movement committed to the belief that just because the world is the way it is, does not mean it must remain that way.

We are dedicated to the idea that change is possible, and are champions of the belief that as human’s we encounter each other through our stories and that in order to challenge the dominate narratives of our culture, that we need to do more than just hear the stories of our brothers and sisters, we need to listen.

We believe that to #ToListenIsToLove, for it is in our stories that we fully encounter one another.

At When Lambs Are Silent we want to create space to have difficult conversations, about difficult stuff, without resorting to dehumanizing or otherizing those on the other side of the political fence. We believe that #LoveIsTheWay and that even in the midst of intense disagreements and debate, that it is vital we hold space for one another, and choose to Love one another, seeing each others humanity, even when - especially when - we disagree.

When Lambs Are Silent is an inclusive space. We seek to stand in solidarity with those who are structurally marginalized within our society. We believe all our whānau have value, and envision a world where poverty is eradicated, homelessness has ended, and all of our whānau have their mana enhanced and are able to live with dignity and respect.

When Lambs Are Silent
There are a lot of voices in our society, within both established and social media, a cacophony that hits us from every angle, pulling our emotions, thoughts and opinions this way and that.

People speaking for and against ideas, issues, perspectives and … people. Some of these voices are very loud.

But what about the voices that aren’t so loud. What about the ones that no one is sharing because no one is seeing, that no one discusses because no one hears? What about their stories?

At When Lambs Are Silent we endeavor to create a space for those voices to tell their stories. To amplify the voices of those our society has traditionally ignored, and at others times systematically sought to suppress. We seek to create space for various voices to be heard, and an environment where Lambs need not be silent.

This is not about agreeing with one another, and at times the stories here will be challenging, confronting, and even, painful to hear, but we believe that as we listen to one another, we can learn to love each other. And Love, well Love is the beginning of Revolution.

About our founder

A.J. (Aaron) Hendry is a Youth Worker, writer, podcaster, advocate for social justice, and founder of When Lambs Are Silent.

From West Auckland, Aaron calls Massey home and currently lives in an intentional community with his wife and three kids.

Aaron has been a Youth Worker for over a decade, and began his journey into Youth Development through volunteer work with Massey Community Trust. It was in this work with MCT that Aaron first started to get a sense of the reality of housing insecurity and homelessness for rangatahi, and how important it was to addresss this injustice if young people were going to be able to heal and thrive. He has since practiced Youth Work within a variety of contexts including Te Wananga o Aotearoa, Youthline, and currently leads a service supporting rangatahi who experience homelessness.

Aaron is also a member of Manaaki Rangatahi, a collective working to end youth homelessness within Aotearoa.

Aaron has also continued his work with Massey Community Trust, and is currently a board member of the trust, and supporting the development and growth of the Safety Net Project. A grass roots response to youth homelessness within local communities.

Aaron did an undergraduate degree in theology with Laidlaw College and continues to study and engage in this space. He believes that change happens when we engage both our thinking and our actions as we work to be the change we want to see. He also believes in the power of stories as impetus for change, believing that change happens as we engage with one another in Love, coming to the table with a willingness to listen and learn from each other.
